Any tips for getting the cheapest airfare into any European city for a summer Eurotrip?

I want to take a few weeks off this August/September to have a Eurotrip. Flights are just so expensive getting into Europe. Is it cheaper to wait until the last minute or buy now? Any good websites for deals? What European city is usually the cheapest to fly into from NYC?
