Why is usc getting all the #1 talk?

usc did go 12-1 losing to Oregon St. and everyone is talking that they should be national champs. but was anyone even watching the sugar bowl last night. Utah completely demolished Alabama and are undefeated 13-0 and nobody is talking. Why?
